Abyssinia / Set of Lamps

from Pet Lamps

Handcrafted in Addis Adaba, Ethiopa

The Abyssinia collection rescues the most representative techniques and languages from Ethiopian traditional basket weaving. Local patterns, heavy and opac material, strong colors, and smooth shapes make PET Lamp Abyssinia a reflection of african character.

For this collection the artisans use a traditional basketry technique called “coiled”, weaving the palm leaf together with the plastic bottle. This creates strong horizontal lampshades, of weight and magnitude whose drawings —freely chosen by the artisans— reflect the cosmogony of their local culture.

PET Lamps latest collection, Abyssinia, was developed in collaboration with local artisans in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The project aims to help women who have twin children, something that is heavily stigmatised in the local culture. So PET collaborated with the group Mothers of Twins to help provide the group assistance and raise awareness.

Brand story

PET Lamp Project, founded by Alvaro Catalán de Ocón, is part of an ongoing mission to revitalise weaving craft among indigenous communities around the world. PET Lamp is a consolidated project that merges the reuse of PET plastic bottles with selected traditional weaving techniques from different corners of the world in order to create unique handmade lampshades.

Starting in Columbia five years ago, the Spanish designer has since worked with groups in Japan, Ethiopia, Chile and now Australia, with each community bringing their unique traditions to their interpretations.
