from Weighted Lines

Handprinted in Japan

Appearing more like a topographic map of the surrounding area, this uniquely shaped tree stump was discovered in the Chiba prefecture in Japan’s eastern coast. The unique shape is due to the tree’s location on steep mountainside where large roots had to cling on to the side of the land. It feels ancient and primitive, growth rings naturally tighten up near the perimeter of the tree pulling in finer details towards the outer layers of bark.

The print was made during Weighted Lines artist, David Aldous, long journey across Japan in 2017. The sun was relentless, with zero shade covering due to land clearing — the landscape resembled something out of a post apocalyptic time.

Brand story

Weighted Lines pays homage to nature through limited edition prints of fallen trees. David Aldous, the artist behind the project, works closely with each tree in order to reflect its authentic state, its unique characteristics, and to uncover its raw identity. With a natural curiosity and adventurous spirit, David has ventured across national parks and forests in regional Victoria and NSW, as well as overseas in New Zealand and Japan to reconnect with the earth, experience the beauty of nature, and to make a record of these fallen giants.

Pressings are sold in their original state, pulled directly from each tree, hand numbered and signed. Ten pressings are made from each tree, and 10% of prints are given to the traditional land owners of the region from where the tree stood.
